Morning Security Brief: Mystery Drone, Tools to Fight Terrorists, and Armed Officers

► CNN says that a mystery drone "came within 200 feet of a commercial jet over New York, triggering an FBI appeal to the public for any information about the unusual and potentially dangerous incident. The crew of Alitalia Flight 608 approaching John F. Kennedy airport on Monday reported the sighting." The craft was described as three to four feet wide, black, and with four propellers. The jet was coming in for a landing and was at about 1,750 feet at the time of the encounter.


An article in The Washington Post discusses the Authorization for Use of Military Force, a resolution passed by Congress in the immediate aftermath of the 9-11 attacks. The resolution has been used to mount various counterterrorism operations since 9-11, leading experts to worry that the measure is being stretched too far beyond its original intent.



►Newtown, Connecticut, scene of the massacre of school children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary last December, is considering sworn and armed school security officers. The officers "would only work when school is in session as one way to beef up school security while keeping costs down, Chief of Police Michael Kehoe said Tuesday night," reports the New Haven Register.
